Private Hong Island Sunset Tour by Longtail Boat

Description
A private longtail for the second half of the day: the Hong Islands in the late afternoon after the day boats have gone, sunset from the beach, and the swim with bioluminescent plankton on the way home. It is the same boat and the same freedom as the private day charter, moved to the best hours of the day.

Pickup window14:30–15:00A late start compared with every day tour, which is the whole point of this trip. Ao Nang transfers are included; Railay and Centara Grand carry a 500 baht surcharge, and Klong Muang, Tub Kaek, Krabi Town and Ao Nam Mao 1,200 baht.
Meet your captain and agree the shape of the evening before you leave. The boat is yours, so if you want longer somewhere or want to skip a stop, this is the moment to say so. The longtail takes about 40 minutes to reach the islands.
The islands in the late afternoon, after the day boats have gone home. This is the quietest the group gets and the light on the limestone is far better than the flat overhead sun of midday. The captain works the order around the tide, since the lagoon entrance is easiest at mid-tide. Koh Rai is added when the sea allows.
Sunset from the sand rather than from the boat. If you arranged the barbecue in advance it is set up on the beach here; if not, a lunch box at 100 baht per person is the simpler option. This is the part most couples book the tour for.
Once it is fully dark, a swim in open water where bioluminescent plankton can light up around you as you move. How much you see comes down to darkness above all, so nights around the new moon are far better than a bright moon. It is a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed, and a faint display is not refundable, because everything else on the tour still runs.
The run back to Nopparat Thara in the dark, which is cooler than most people expect. A dry layer is worth having in the bag.

The islands at their quietest, and a finish well after dark. This is the tour couples book for a proposal or an anniversary, and the crew are used to arranging the beach for that.
The barbecue has to be arranged in advance, not decided on the boat, so raise it when you book.
The plankton is the one part of any tour we will not promise. Book it for the sunset and the empty beaches, and take the plankton as the bonus when the sky is dark enough.
FAQs
For the whole boat. Please check the prices above for reference. The price does not change with how many of you there are inside a band, so a couple and a group of five pay the same. The national park fee is separate and paid per person at the islands, in cash.
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Bioluminescent plankton is a living thing, not a light switch. The single biggest factor is darkness, so the nights around the new moon are far better than a bright full moon, and cloud cover helps. When conditions are right it is remarkable. There is no refund if the plankton does not show, because the rest of the tour runs as booked, so book this one for the sunset and the swim and treat the plankton as the bonus it is.
The boat, the captain and the day are yours. You set the departure time, you decide how long to stay at each stop, and you can skip one entirely or ask to sit longer at the lagoon. On a joined tour the running order is fixed by the group. That flexibility is what most private bookings are really buying, ahead of any question of comfort.
No. The Than Bok Khorani National Park entry fee is paid at the islands and is not part of the tour price. It is 300 baht per adult and 150 baht per child aged 4 to 11, in cash. Bring it with you: there is no card machine at the park and no ATM on the islands.
No, it is arranged on request and priced separately, so tell us when you book if you want it. Without it you still get the sunset from the beach and the swim afterwards. A lunch box at 100 baht per person is the simpler option if you just want food on board.
The lunch box is cheaper than the buffet add-on (price per person). Also, if you choose to book the lunch box, you can eat it at any destination in the itinerary. You can even choose to enjoy your meal on the private boat. However, if you choose to book the buffet add-on, this is going to be a shared group buffet line with other guests included, and it has to be served at the designated stop or island in this tour.
The boat crew speak enough English for the day to run smoothly, and a dedicated English-speaking guide is an optional extra at 1,200 baht for the whole boat. Most groups do not add one. If you want the history of the islands and the marine park explained properly as you go, it is worth it.
Pickup is from about 14:30 and the boat leaves Nopparat Thara at 15:00. You have the islands in the late afternoon when the day boats have gone, sunset from the beach around 18:00, then the plankton swim on the way back. Hotel drop-off is usually between 19:30 and 20:00.
Pickup is from your hotel and it is included from Ao Nang at no charge, with Railay and Centara Grand at a 500 baht surcharge and Klong Muang, Tub Kaek, Krabi Town and Ao Nam Mao at 1,200 baht. Give us your hotel name and room number when you book and we send the exact time the day before. If you are staying outside those areas, message us before booking and we will tell you whether we can reach you.
No. Life vests are provided and worn in the water at every stop, and the guide stays with the group. The beaches at Pakbia and Hong Island shelve gently, so non-swimmers and small children can stand in the shallows.
The tour runs in light rain, which is common and passes quickly. The decision that matters is the sea state, not the sky: if the port authority closes the pier or the captain judges the crossing unsafe, we contact you to move the tour to another date or refund you in full. We never send a boat out in conditions we would not take our own families out in.
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash for the park fee and anything you buy on the day. Mask, snorkel and life vest are provided. A dry bag is worth having: longtail boats take spray, and phones and cameras are the things people lose.
Yes. Cancelling or moving your booking to another date is free up to 24 hours before the tour starts, and anything you have paid is refunded in full. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the start time are non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded. If we have to cancel, for example for weather or safety, you can move to another date or take a full refund.
To keep the ride safe, this tour is not suitable for pregnant women. If that could apply to anyone in your group, contact us before booking and we will help you find a better fit.

The best evening of our entire Thailand trip. Dinner on the beach at sunset was magical and the plankton swim is unreal. Do not skip it.

Mooie avond, goed verzorgd. Alleen het was iets kouder op de boot terug dan verwacht, neem een trui mee.

Qué experiencia. El capitán era encantador y la cena en la playa al atardecer fue inolvidable. El plancton fue la cereza del pastel.

Good tour, not cheap but worth it for a special occasion. The sunset was the highlight.

Booked this for our honeymoon and it was perfect. Private boat, quiet islands, sunset, BBQ on the sand, and then the plankton. Incredible night.
